It’s #Giving Tuesday. This is my kind of day. Most days after Thanksgiving are about acquiring more stuff to shove in our overflowing closets. But today is about giving to non-profits that help others.
I always encourage my clients to buy experiences as gifts instead of things — take a child to the Carolina Ballet’s Nutcracker or a local basketball game. (My kids have memorized the NC State’s women’s basketball roster because my husband takes them even though we are not NC State grads.) One friend goes on a trip with her family every year instead of getting them Christmas gifts. They will remember these times more than the iPod Nano you got them. Trust me.
But today is about reaching out to others beyond your family. Charities hope #Giving Tuesday as big as Black Friday and Cyber Monday. You can read more here. I love this idea even more than buying experiences. We need to remember there are many people in our community who are food insecure, who live pay check to pay check and whose kids don’t get a new iPad every year. It’s hard to think about that lined up at an electronics store at 5 a.m. on Black Friday.
Below are a list of some of my favorite non-profits. What are yours?
