I am an organizer, not a decorator or stylist. I can tell you how arrange furniture for better flow. I can make your closets pretty. I can help you get rid of everything you don’t use, so you can breath easier in your home.
But I can’t pick out your colors. I can refer you to a wonderful interior decorator.
I can tell you what your style is after a closet clean out, but I can’t put outfits together either — something folks often ask for.
In fact, I’ve always wanted someone to help put my outfits together, especially since I don’t have an office job. I have designer items from local consignment shops, but I usually wear yoga clothes, so I don’t have to think about how they go together.
So I hired Alex Long, a stylist with Style Hawk and former owner of Beanie + Cecil, to come to my closet and tell me how to use my clothes, which ones to purge and what I needed to buy. (I always tell clients shop in your closets instead of buying more stuff!) Ironically, I met Alex because she is the buyer for barre3, where I get yoga clothes.
First we purged. It was surprisingly more than I thought. I am pretty cleaned out. But some things were just out of date.
Then she put together outfits, so I can use what I have. I would never have thought to pair the things she did. She is a genius. I took photos to help me remember.
This one for a casual meeting or dinner out:
For casual days instead of yoga pants:
While I have plenty of nicer clothes, she told me I was missing the basics — a common issue in women’s closets. I had no white T-shirts, or black ones. I had no casual black pants.
A few days later we met at the mall to go shopping. Because I had purged several bags worth of clothes, I had room. Alex loves Madewell in Crabtree Valley Mall. I had never been, but I found T’s and pants there. I am now a huge fan. We also bought some cute sandals with small heels. I mostly wear flats.
And that was it.
I plan to have her back soon to put together outfits with my fall and winter clothes. That way, I can shop in my own closet, which is a must for an organized life.
