When help clients declutter their homes, I always find two common items: wire hangers and Apple product boxes — iPhones, iPads, computers, etc.
Why?
I always joke with clients that I am like Mommy Dearest when it comes to wire hangers. I hate them. And you and your clothes deserve better than to be hung on a paperclip.
I request you take your dry cleaning off the hangers when you get your clothes home. Take off that plastic, too. Your clothes need to breathe.
Most dry cleaners will take wire hangers and recycle them, so you don’t put them in the landfill. We keep our wire hangers next to the dry cleaning pile, and we take them back when we make the next dry cleaning run.
Go do it now. I will wait. Go on.
If Mommy Dearest was around for the iPhone, she would feel the same way about those boxes you keep in every corner of your closets. You do not need to keep the boxes for electronics unless you are returning the product. Throw those suckers in the recycling bin. It’s a BOX! It’s not the iPhone. It collects dust. It grows mold. It’s clutter.
We have made up so many stories in our heads that we have to keep all this stuff. What is the story you have told yourself about why you HAVE TO keep the computer/TV/cell phone box? I would love to know so I will help you change those stories. It’s just a story. It’s not the law.
Alright, you have some homework to do until we meet again next Tuesday. Get recycling.
